Business Incubation hits its big

As a business incubation professional, I am constantly describing what it is I do to people that feel I must work with chickens/eggs and that sort of thing.  I'm not complaining as it gives me the open door to tell them about just how beneficial incu ...

Announcing the July Winner: Bob Varner, DualSoft USA of Ida Grove

July's contest has come to a close and Bob Varner of Ida Grove, Iowa took home this month's $1,000 contest prize.  His business, DualSoft USA, is based around a patented invention he put together to make water softeners more efficient.  His product h ...

Iowa Small Business Loan Program launches

In a continued effort by the State of Iowa to help jumpstart entrepreneurship and small business, the state is now running a pretty cool new loan program called the Iowa Small Business Loan Program.  For those of you having trouble getting ...

LLC, S Corp, Sole Proprietorship – Does it Really Make a Difference?

The initial decisions made in starting up a business can have a significant impact as your business grows.  Starting from a proper base can allow you to customize and expand your business structure as the business expands, whereas a “quick and dirty” ...

Small Business and the MN Twins: A Great Combo Platter

Rarely do my main interests and reasons for writing, Small Biz and the Twins come together so perfectly.  But that is what Bruce Schoenfield, who recently penned a great story on the two for Entrepreneur Magazine.  I know most of you probably could c ...

Friday-palooza for 7/23/10

Good piece from Scott Allen on passive income, every entrepreneur's best friend.

Looking for ways to write a blog that's twice the drivvel that I have here?  It won't be tough, but if you need a little help- Tim Berry has some great ideas - http://timberry.bplans.com/2010/07/10-blogging-tips-my-1000th-post-on-this-blog.html

Voting Begins at Noon Today!

We have officially closed the books on new entrants for the July contest.  In all, we have over 80 entries for the July contest, so it should be a fun race to watch.  Remember that voting starts today at noon CST and you can only vote once per day.   ...

Making money without doing much

Scott Allen ran a nice piece on passive income this morning over at Open Forum.  He takes a little time to talk to the sweetest of money you can make - the passive kind.  Sure you can inherit it, or find it in your couch cushions, or maybe pick up a ...

The Bank of Wal-Mart?

Just when you thought there wasn't much else they could sell you, they've taken a giant leap into financial services - specifically small business loans. They've tried for years to work their way into becoming a player in the financial services space ...

Voting begins today at DreamBigGrowHere.com

As I type this, we have about an hour to go before we open up the polls for voting for the first run of the Dream Big Grow Here grant contest.  Remember, anyone can vote, but you can only vote once per day between now and the last day of the month.  My advice: Vote Early and Vote Often.

Two Days to Go!

We've nearly reached the 15th of June already, which means there is only a couple days left to submit entries for the June Dream Big Grow Here contest.  If you haven't gotten your entry in, you need to do so by the time the clock strikes midnight on June 15th.  We've already had quite a response with ideas ranging from photography to tourism from all over the state of Iowa.  It's been exciting to see them roll in, keep 'em coming!

Spreading some (Free) Google Love

I don’t try to use my blog as an advertising space, and you know Google sure doesn’t need the extra pub, but they have quite the suite of services to offer small businesses. My main intent on showing them a little love, is based on the fact that most of what they do for you is FREE. Let’s run down the list or at least the highlights as I see them:

Friday-palooza 6/4/10

The folks at Kauffman (yes, of the Royals ballpark vintage) always seem to have the latest on entrepreneurial stats.  This one doesnt suprise me in the least, and actually encourages me that entrepreneurship is alive and very well.

Handling/Leveraging the Media for your small biz

When you are livin on the cheap side, "frugal" - as I like to say, you are constantly on the look out to save a buck.  That all goes without saying.  So why would you pay for advertising, when you can work the media for a little free ink?

Friday-palooza 5/21/10

Pretty much every other blog I try to read has some sort of friday link-o-mania.  Some are pretty entertaining, others I find a bit drab.  I'm hoping to aim for a little more of the former and a little less of the later.  With that as a back drop, here are a few thoughts on the week that was - in terms of small business news and notes, sure, plus a fewstray cats thrown in as well.

Merchant Services - Ah, those hidden fees

I had intended to write about the wonderful world of credit card fees a few weeks back as I was getting things together for the store, but I havent exactly found time for it.  At some point, I intend to put something a bit more full blown together on how it all works, but for now I just want to get a few words of advice out to you.

Today is Grand Opening-Eve!

I know its not a real holiday, but I am making it up anyway.  So here at the home office of Bootrappin', we have come to the final turn.  Tomorrow is the big open, so this is the last day to make sure we've got it together.  And for the most part, I think we do.

Facebook's latest - a round up from F8

Facebook recently had their annual developer's conference, F8, where they unveil the latest in all things Facebookie.  As you know I am not an IT geek, you may be wondering why I am blogging about something from the realms of potential geekery.

The Countdown is On – T minus 4 days – Time versus Money

We just had our last weekend before the open, so it was that last big chunk of time to get the place ready to go.  Unlike most things I do, I feel pretty prepared to go.  The inventory is stocked, the sign is hung, the wine and apps are ready to go, and it feels like we are down to a few nitty gritties as we roll into the last week.

Etsy.com -Revisited

I know I’ve mentioned Etsy.com before, but I was out surfing around some of the small biz site’s out there today and came across a pretty open interview with Etsy founder, Rob Kalin, in the WSJ.  Kalin’s perspective resonated with me this morning as he says “Be ready to do a hundred different things really well, and in a short period of time.”

Step 2: Examine the Market

Somewhere in there alongside Step One is the necessary work of doing your initial SWOT analysis, examining the competition, and determining how exactly you are going to add yourself and your business to the mix.  This isnt necessarily rocke ...

Step 1a: The Checklist

As a quick follow up to my interview with Mike Hahn, I wanted to share a checklist that follows up on that info.  Sure, its a pretty long checklist, but I think it does a great job of detailing out most of the preliminary work you'll need to do.

Step 1: Let's Get Started

Ok, so you are past the stage of writing your idea on the napkin at happy hour and talking it through with your buddies and actually ready to get started.  Think of this first step as putting the floaties on your arms for that first swim.  Its go ...

Bootstrappin' with Beenken

As a small business consultant, I wonder if sometimes my clients may be saying to themselves “that’s easy for you to say”, “why don’t you try it”, “what are you thinking” and so on. As of April of this year, that will no longer apply. I will of ...

The ETSY way?

Not sure if any of you have come across etsy.com before, but they have some pretty cool things going on for those of you looking for an outlet to sell handmade goods. Everyone knows ebay and craigslist and those formats, but this one seems to hav ...
