Sales--The Impact of Authority

Being an authority (i.e., having subject matter expertise) will increase referrals, sales opportunities, and ultimately ... sales.

The fact is, the perception that obedience to authority constitutes correct behavior has been instilled in us through systematic socialization. It is so strong, that we respond to mere symbols of authority rather than to its substance.

For example, imagine observing a group of people at a busy downtown intersection. If a teenager in droopy jeans and a t-shirt decides to cross the intersection when the traffic signal reads "don't walk," it is unlikely that anyone will follow him. However, if a fifty year old male dressed in a suit carrying a briefcase does the same thing, many people will follow him.

What's the difference? (continue reading)

Don't Confuse Prospecting with Networking

Successful networking (or rather the lack of success) has been a topic that has come up many times in the last month with my clients, workshops, and networking conversations. The common complaint is that people only network to find their next deal and they are not interested in reciprocity or relationships.

In one conversation, a client mentioned having been invited to a specific networking group several months ago. There are about twenty people in this group. Like most groups, they settled into the meeting by having everyone give their short elevator speech. Then a member of the group gave a longer presentation about their business while the rest of the group ate lunch followed by some small group conversations.

This sounds pretty typical, but here is the rest of the story. (Continue Reading)

Last Tuesday a major storm went through Cedar Falls. Some areas of town were hit with tennis ball size hail. Apparently when a storm hits, the out-of-town construction companies follow it.

Those of you who have had hail damage probably already know this. When an adjustor gets on your roof to locate hail damage, they circle the spots with bright chalk. That makes it pretty easy for roofing companies to drum up leads. As a result of the circles on my roof, I had a guy stop by the house the other night wanting to know if I had chosen a subcontractor yet. He was very polite and told me he "wanted to earn my business." Such a simple phrase, but it really struck a chord with me. I can't remember the last time someone told me they wanted to "earn my business." Every company earns business, at least initially. The thing that always scares me is once they have my business, will they continue to strive to earn it?
