Not all businesses are started with venture capital, an IPO, or a huge loan from the bank. Many successful start up firms are created from the ground up without a dollar of external funding. Beyond seeking out the traditional "friends, family, and fools", bootstrapping has become an increasingly popular and much more risk adverse way to fund the ideas you have been dreaming up. Jane Shekleton of Janie Lynn's Designs in New Hampton will share her own personal experiences of opening and operating her business using bootstrapping techniques and Mike Hahn of the UNI Small Business Development Center will discuss other best practices for bootstrappers.
For the past year, Mike Hahn has been serving as the University of Northern Iowa Small Business Development Center Director. The UNI SBDC provides direct technical assistance to existing as well as new venture entrepreneurs within a nine county region of northeast Iowa. With a background in downtown development, Mike enjoys his office in downtown Waterloo, where he and the UNI Small Business Development Center & 4th Street Incubator have been instrumental in the revitalization process. Mike is an Iowa native (born and raised in Mason City) and a UNI Grad. He's married and the proud father of three children, ages 16, 11 and 6.
